ABU DHABI, 2 October 2006 — A two-monthlong breast cancer awareness campaign entitled “Early Detection Saves Lives” was launched yesterday at the Health Ministry here.

The main objectives of the nationwide campaign includes raising public awareness about breast cancer, educating women on the importance of the early detection and encouraging them to go for screening.

“We hope to reach out to women across the UAE and urge them to make the most of all the free and discounted mammography testing centers. Breast cancer may be life-threatening, but statistics show that early detection increases the chances of survival by up to 98 percent,” said Dr. Mariam Matar, assistant undersecretary for Public Health and Primary Health Care.

Many private hospitals and medical centers across the country are offering discounts on mammography tests during this period.
