MAKKAH, 3 October 2006 — The Grand Mosque security police thwarted a knife-wielding man who was threatening to slit his own throat inside the mosque, Al-Jazirah reported yesterday.

The holy mosque’s security officers negotiated with the man and tried to calm him down.

In the end they managed to take the knife away from him and took him into custody. The reason behind his threat is still unknown.

In another incident, mosque police arrested a pickpocket after observing suspicious behavior, the daily Al-Riyadh reported yesterday. Police found cash in several currencies when they searched the suspect.
