JEDDAH, 3 October 2006 — Ful, or mashed beans, is a staple of the iftar, or fast-breaking, table. During Ramadan, everyone with stomachs grumbling, rushes to the local ful and flatbread vendor, crowding around him in no apparent queue, and demanding to be served before others regardless how long anyone else has been waiting. The Al-Madinah newspaper reported yesterday that during one of these mad ful dashes a Jeddawi father forgot that his 8-year-old son was accompanying him to the ful shop. When he got home, his wife turned hysterical when she realized he had left their child at the ful frenzy. The father quickly headed back to the place to find the kid. Luckily for him, the child was pretty much where dad left him, watching the famished and hurried masses buying ful and flatbread.
