JEDDAH, 8 October 2006 — A Saudi do-gooder saved a divorced woman and her two children from living behind a mosque by providing shelter for them, the Al-Watan daily reported yesterday. The Saudi saw the woman and her children taking shelter behind a mosque by chance. The woman said she had no family to go to after her husband divorced her because she was an orphan.
The Saudi mother said that she had married an Arab man through one of her friends at work. She did not get a permit for marrying a foreigner but the man promised to obtain one as soon as possible. After two months of marriage, she got pregnant and her husband insisted that she has an abortion.
When she refused the man abandoned her. For seven months she was living alone and working to support herself and her child. The man even refused to recognize his child. Finally, she sought help from police who forced the man to recognize his child and take care of them.
The husband turned her life into hell and for four years he was beating her up and throwing her outside the house off and on. Many times he accused her of being unfaithful to him. In the meantime, she got pregnant again and her second child was born.
“I had it enough with my husband and the only way to escape was to get a divorce,” said the woman. “I won the case against him. The court ruled that I will keep my children and that he would pay for child support. But he did not pay for anything and instead threw me and my kids out his house,” she said.
