HYDERABAD, 9 October 2006 — Nine fresh cases of dengue and one death have been reported in Andhra Pradesh yesterday.
Seven Dengue cases were confirmed and another two were suspected cases. These cases have been reported from Khammam (three cases), Hyderabad (two cases) and Anantapur, Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, West Godavari and Warangal (one case each). One fatality was reported in Anantapur.
These figures were cited at a one-day conference on management of mosquito menace and control of water-borne diseases inaugurated by director general of health services (Government of India) Dr. P.K. Srivastava here yesterday.
Dr. Srivastava assured the union government’s help to the dengue-affected states. This disease has spread across north India and slowly surfaced in southern states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and western states such as Gujarat and Maharashtra.
He asked the state government to make joint efforts with the union government to tackle the dengue fever on a war-footing. He also urged the nongovernmental organizations to join in these efforts and bring awareness among people.
Meanwhile, a day ahead of his visit to London and Helsinki, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday visited a hospital where his two dengue-hit grandsons and a son-in-law are admitted even as the virus infected more people in New Delhi taking the total number of known patients to 886.
While New Delhi accounts for 21 deaths, the disease has also enveloped 13 other states killing 24 others in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. A total of 3,331 people are hit across India.
