CAIRO, 11 October 2006 — Egyptian pop singer Tamir Hosni was recently offered a million Egyptian pounds deal to hold a concert during the holy month of Ramadan, according to a press release from the singer on the Internet.
One of Egypt’s leading concert agents made the offer to Tamir, hoping he would agree to hold a performance at one of Cairo’s major hotels. It is the highest offer ever made to any Egyptian or Arab singer; however, there was a string attached to the deal, that it be Tamir’s first performance after his release last month from prison.
Tamir has requested the agent to give him some time to consider the offer. The singer was released on probation and he has to check with the authorities to see if he can give a public performance. On the other hand his attorney said he would be permitted to hold musical performances if he gets the approval from the court which released him.
Al-Watan newspaper reported last month that hundreds of jubilant fans came out on the streets in Cairo to celebrate the release of Tamir, who was serving a sentence with his friend Haytham Shaker, for having forged documents about his military service. Tamir’s popularity has apparently increased considerably after his six months in jail. The press release denied current rumors that Tamir was preparing to become engaged to Sarah Abdul Rauf, with whom he has been in love for the past five years. The engagement was reportedly to have taken place during Eid Al-Adha.
