ALKHOBAR, 14 October 2006 — A big question that is in the minds of the non-resident Keralite (NRK) community in the Kingdom is: where and which course should their child embark on after leaving school?

It is commonly found that NRK parents and their children begin to worry about higher education before their kids reach an age when they can differentiate between the different options that are open and available to them. Why does this happen?

Social status is of course the main reason for this — becoming an engineer or doctor is considered necessary to maintain the status quo among NRKs. In fact, due to the aforementioned reason, parents and children are always worrying about higher education. The question remains: what are the real options available in higher education for NRK students?

It is very important that kids have their say before parents decide to send them off to join a particular course.

In the present world, there are numerous courses available to choose from according to the interests of children. For parents and children, it is prudent to have a look at all options available to them before taking a course in computer engineering and medicine.

It is highly advisable to take into consideration the situation of the global market, which is changing on a daily basis. Taking into consideration all of the factors, NRKs have lots of options available for higher studies.

It is very important that when one decides to opt for engineering, the next step is to identify which field within engineering. In engineering — the first area to come to mind would be computer science. But think of standard and evergreen courses like mechanical engineering, civil engineering, marine engineering or start thinking about modern areas like biotechnology, nanotechnology. If you have plans to fly to Gulf countries in the future — then think of petroleum engineering, chemical engineering and metal engineering.

If there is any chance of shifting your thinking to something other than engineering, then think of a Bachelors degree in any of the specialist subjects like commerce and management and make sure you have your heart set on taking up a Master’s degree as well in the field of choice.

If you are interested in science then your obvious choice would be an MBBS but it should be understood that life will not be that easy for another few years. Doing just a Bachelors degree would take you nowhere. You would have to specialize and master the field of your interest in order to be successful. Think of all the potential options in the medical field and you will find that there are courses related to human sciences, environmental biology, social work, psychology, and various other paramedical courses as well.

Doing something that everybody does is good but getting it done in style is better. Be smart and choose the best possible option available. NRKs should really consider the quality of education and future opportunities at different colleges before deciding one.

Getting a degree from a reputable institute is always better than others. Going abroad and getting a higher degree will definitely add to their success.

When thinking of a higher education, never forget to think of options till you resolutely decide and make up your mind. Education and smart working will always differentiate one from another.
