ZAMBOANGA CITY, 24 October 2006 — Unidentified gunmen killed 5 members of farming family and wounded two children in an attack on a remote village in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga Sibugay, officials said.
Killed in the attack in a village ironically called Bagong Buhay (new life) in Alicia town were a couple, an old woman and two daughters.
Capt. Noel Abello, a regional army spokesman, said investigators are looking into the possibility that the killing stemmed from an old grudge.
Abello said the family was having dinner in their home on Saturday when the gunmen opened fire.
He said no individual or group claimed responsibility for the killings. He said the area is a known lair of communist rebels. Family feud and clan war are also rampant in the province.
