JEDDAH, 8 November 2006 — Sheikh Obaid Al-Obaid, a judge at the Court of Grievances, informed Jeddah medical interns, who finished their internship without getting their prematurely deducted allowances, that they have won the case since the ruling issued in their favor was not appealed against.
The final decision was announced yesterday at the Court of Grievances after the one-month period for appeal had ended. The interns’ representative will appear at the court on Saturday to officially receive the final verdict.
Around SR17 million will be paid to about 400 medicine, dentistry, medical technology and nursing students. The students finished their internship in August and are already working or looking for work.
The grant deduction was to be implemented in September last year, but KAAU interns saw their handouts shrink six months prior to the date while their peers in the Kingdom’s other seven universities were given their full stipends. Since then the interns have been fighting back and forth with the administration at KAAU, the Education Ministry, the Labor Ministry and finally at court where they succeeded in getting back their dues.
The students are now looking forward to their checks and hope that because a final verdict has been issued by the Court of Grievances, it will not take long for them to receive them.
