TAIF, 19 November 2006 — Police arrested a youth who is thought to have fired several shots at a group of people in the Nakhb district of Taif on Thursday. According to a police source, the youth sought refuge at a bachelors’ accommodation of expatriate workers immediately after the incident. However, the police surrounded the building and arrested the youth who was attempting to escape by the back door apparently with the help of some of the men inside. Police have been unable to find the gun used by the youth, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday.
Student Complains of Police Torture
TAIF, 19 November 2006 — Police are currently investigating a complaint lodged by a university student who said he was assaulted by two policemen. The youth alleged that having dropped his brother off at a secondary school in Taif, a policeman stopped his car and asked to see his identity card. He explained to the officer that he was returning having dropped his brother off at school and had left his card at home. The officer then called another policeman and forced the student to get out of the car and then assaulted him. According to a medical report issued by the King Faisal Hospital, the youth suffered injuries all over his body.
The policemen involved in the incident told investigators that they had to use force as the youth was resisting a search, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday.
