ISLAMABAD, 27 November 2006 — A former member of the National Assembly from Jamaat-e-Islami, Haroon Rashid, who had resigned to protest the missile attack on a madrasa in Bajaur Agency, was arrested by security forces in Khyber region.
Rashid was arrested after he spoke at a public meeting at Dara Adam Khail on Saturday. Jamaat leaders have condemned his detention and demanded immediate release.
Zar Nur Afridi, a local Jamaat leader and Maulana Sirajul Haq, a former senior minister of the NWFP government speaking at a press conference in Peshawar demanded probe into the Khar madrasa attack and immediate release of Rashid. The attack on Khar madrasa killed 80 people.
The Khar incident remains a mystery. Following the attack the Pakistan Army claimed responsibility saying the madrasa was a military training facility for Al-Qaeda militants, while some American journalists quoting the US Defense Intelligence Agency reported that an American Predator carried out the attack.
Meanwhile, authorities in Khyber Agency said those violating laws in the tribal region would be arrested.
