KARACHI, 2 December 2006 — A magnificent burst of spin bowling by Danish Kaneria, who was well supported by seamer Abdul Razzaq, in the last session of the last day, propelled Pakistan to victory in the third and final Test against West Indies by 199 runs and clinched the series, 2-0 here yesterday.

Final scores: Pakistan 304 and 399 for 6 declared; West Indies 260 and 244 for 9.

Pakistan won the first Test by nine wickets in Lahore. The second Test played in Multan, ended in a draw.

The tourists, who were set 444 to win the third Test and level the series, crumbled to 244 for nine wit almost an hour’s play remaining on the last day.

Vice captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, who made 35 before suffering an injury, did not return to bat due to a hairline fracture. He has been ruled out of the five-match one-day series which begins from Dec. 5.

Except for Shivnarine Chanderpau, who battled against a rejuvenated Pakistan spin-cum-pace attack hit a fighting 69. As long as the stylish left-hander was in the middle there was hope that the West Indies would salvage a draw.

But leg spinner Kaneria, who initiated the downfall of the tourists’second inning, dismissed him and then removed Daren Powell next ball to set up Pakistan’s win. Chanderpaul, 32, had added 57 runs for the fifth wicket with Dwayne Bravo.

Set an improbable target, the West Indies survived the first 90 minutes of the extended two-and-a-half hour first session as skipper Lara and Sarwan batted cautiously after resuming the day at the overnight score of 39-2.

It was seamer Umer Gul, the moving force behind Pakistan’s first win inLahore, who forced Lara to play an uppish drive which was smartly snapped by Shoaib Malik at mid-off. Lara hit nine boundaries during his 92-ball knock of 49. Like on a number of previous occasions, Lara’s departure heralded the collapse of an otherwise strong West Indies batting line up.

Sarwan had to retire hurt after he was hit on the right foot by a full length delivery from Gul. The West Indies vice-captain went to has been ruled out of the one-day series which follows the Test series.

Renaku Morton who joined Chanderpaul, hit two boundaries and a six off Kaneria before giving the leg-spinner a return catch to leave the West Indies at 144-4 at lunch.

After the break, Shahid Nazir dismissed Bravo with an edge to the slips to break the stubborn fifth wicket stand and raised hopes of a Pakistan win.

Ultimately Pakistan won with some time to spare, but that didn’t look likely through the first hour in the morning, when Lara and Sarwan started proceedings.

In St. Lucia earlier this year Lara had saved the Test against India with a last-day century, and he threatened to repeat the feat.

All in all Pakistan dominated the series. With a comparatively less experienced pace attack they had to depend a lot on leg spinner Kaneria. But Gul and Nazir and in the fag end of the last Test yesterday ,Razzaq bowled extremely well and did not allow the visitors to settle down.
