MUMBAI, 15 December 2006 - A suburban local train rammed into another suburban train at the Thane railway station on Wednesday night at 11.55 p.m. Ten commuters were injured.
According to the spokesman of the Central Railway, a Titwala-bound train hit a train stationery on the platform from the rear. The exact cause and reason of the accident is not known and that is being ascertained, the spokesman said.
Suresh Jadhav, a railway police official said that the injured passengers were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Thane for treatment and that the railways had dispatched a medical relief van from Mumbai to Thane station.
Movement of rail traffic disrupted due to the accident returned to normal yesterday afternoon, a railways official said.
Meanwhile, agitators blocked trains at several stations in Mumbai following a response to a nationwide strike by Left-affiliated trade unions yesterday. Left-affiliated trade unions are protesting "anti-people" economic and labor policies of the United Progressive Alliance government.
The Railway police removed the agitators from the railway tracks after which normal traffic resumed.
