JEDDAH, 23 December 2006 — The captain of an Eritrean helicopter and his assistant have requested political asylum after landing north of Jizan yesterday afternoon, the Saudi Press Agency said, quoting an official of the Defense and Aviation Ministry.
“An investigation is under way to know the reasons for this landing,” the official said.
He said the captain of the Russian-made aircraft sent out an SOS to Jizan Airport before landing safely, adding that the crew was provided a secure landing.
