ALKHOBAR, 24 December 2006 — A shopping center here became an impromptu women’s boxing arena after two women got into a tussle over some undisclosed grievance, the daily Al-Yaum reported. The two ladies got serious enough about the match that at some point they both took the opportunity to remove their hijabs and abayas in order to prevent the opponent from having a nice fist-full of fabric to grab. Other shoppers formed a circle around the fighters, and some even began cheering along for their favorite. A few men were quoted as saying they were hesitant to try to break up the fight out of fear of being accused by women of inappropriate groping. (What’s better? Watching a fight, or being dragged into it and falsely accused for attempting to stop it?) Police eventually arrived and detained both women to get to the bottom of what caused them to impersonate Maggie Fitzgerald, the headstrong woman boxer in the 2004 film “Million Dollar Baby”, played by Hillary Swank.
