RIYADH, 24 December 2006 — The Omani conjoined twins Safa and Marwa were brought here by their parents on Friday for medical evaluation and possible separation surgery.
The twins arrived at King Khaled Airport by a Gulf Air flight from Muscat and were received by Sami Al-Shalaan, director of public affairs at King Abdul Aziz Medical City and Omani diplomats.
Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, CEO of National Guard Health Affairs, examined the twins. After the preliminary tests, Al-Rabeeah said it would be possible to separate the twins who are attached at the head. However, he stressed that further tests are necessary to determine the extent of involvement of vital blood vessels and brain membranes.
The evaluation of the twins will include extensive medical work-up on patients, multiple meetings and discussions among the surgeons and making the parents involved in the project.
