MANAMA, 3 January 2007 — Bahraini police arrested a Saudi Interior Ministry officer after his vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run accident that left a Bahraini man and his wife dead yesterday morning.
The damaged car as well as the passport of the suspect — who holds the rank of colonel — was found near the accident scene after the car had collided with another car, which then veered off the road and crashed into a parked cement truck.
The collision killed the Bahraini driver, Ebrahim Abdullah Ali Khadim, 66, on the spot. His 49-year-old wife died shortly afterward in hospital.
Both victims had to be freed by firemen from the wreck after being trapped under the cement truck.
An Indian worker was slightly injured after he was also forced into the truck.
“The Bahraini family was traveling in the right lane when he (the Saudi) side-struck them from the left and forced them into the truck in our work area off the road,” one of the workers on the scene said.
The 51-year-old Riyadh-based colonel fled the scene on foot after he abandoned the car, with police deploying several units in an attempt to locate him.
He was arrested a short while later at a Manama hotel where he was taken into police custody.
It is believed that the colonel was on his way back to Saudi Arabia when the accident occurred.
