NAJRAN, 9 January 2007 — Rushing up to the podium of a mosque, grabbing the microphone, and chanting “Long Live Saddam Hussein!” is probably not the best way to win friends and influence people. A man in this southern Saudi city about 200 kilometers east of Jizan did just that, according to yesterday’s Al-Watan daily. The worshippers, who were shocked by the man using a mosque to express, broadcast his political views, “strongly intervened” to stop the man. We’re not sure what “strongly intervened” means exactly. We can only imagine that he was probably quite forcefully removed from his soapbox.
