CAIRO, 15 January 2007 — Tempted by the unprecedented box office success of its first wide screen film “Emarat Yacoubian,” (The Yacoubian Building), the Good News Cinema Productions Company announced plans for another film, “Marjan Ahmad Marjan” with Adel Imam in the male lead and Merfat Amin as the female lead, the Al-Watan Arabic daily reported yesterday.
Ali Idriss directs the new comedy, which is based on a story written by Yusuf Muati; it criticizes corrupt practices in society.
The film will portray contemporary corruption rampant in both business and political circles in the Arab world in general and in Egypt in particular.
In the film, Imam plays a corrupt businessman opposed to Merfat, an honest society woman; they are both seeking a parliamentary seat. While the businessman resorts to every possible dubious trick to gain the seat, the woman wages an honorable and honest fight to win the election.
