JEDDAH, 29 January 2007 — The 1st Squash Open Championship for the Makkah Gov. Prince Abdulmajeed ibn Abdulaziz Cup organized by Heraa Club will be held Feb. 7 to 9 at Al-Wehda club’s squash hall.
The matches are to be played after Isha prayer. The competition is open to all age groups.
According to Abdullah Al-Muwallad, president of the organizing committee, this will be one of the biggest squash tournaments in the Kingdom. “It also carries a name that is dear to our hearts,” he said.
Valuable prizes are up for grabs in the tournament where foreign players are expected to enter. “ The door is also open for all to register until the last hour before the championship kicks off,” Al-Muwwalad said adding the registration is “free of charge.”
The championship will run under the supervision of the Saudi Squash Federation which is keen to promote the sport of squash in the Kingdom.
Saudi Sport Channel is the media sponsor and the rest of the sponsors are: Al-Turki Commercial Group, Mobil, STC Pepsi, Hob Juice, Taibah Water Company, Delta for Marketing, Foaad Hussain Group, Makkah Grand Coral Hotel and The Arab National Bank. Al-Muwallad thanked the Makkah Youth Welfare office for the staging of the championship.
Members of the national team including the promising 19-year old Mohammed Al-Seif are unlikely to participate because the championship starts immediately after their mid-term final examinations and some of them did not have time to train.
Al-Muwwalad said “this championship offers us a great opportunity and would enable us to discover more talented athletes to represent the Kingdom in international competitions in future.”
