JEDDAH, 5 February 2007 — To prepare for the 12th Gulf Athletics Championship for first teams and the 5th for juveniles on April 3, to be hosted by Bahrain, the Saudi national team begin training camp in four different cities from Feb. 7.
Hurdler Hadi Souan, the Asian record holder, will supervise the training along with Larry Wade for the short distance races in Jeddah. In Abha, Algerian coach Mohammed Salim and Sudanese Khalifah Omar and Saad Al-Asmari will call shots in long distance races. The decathletes will train in Riyadh under Murad Basha and Jabir Al-Nashri. Khalid Al-Khaldi will supervise the training of athletes in the throwing events — javelin, discus and hammer — in the Eastern Province along with coach Russian Yoursvinko.
Saudi Youth Bowlers Gear Up for 2 Events
JEDDAH, 5 February 2007 — Saudi Bowling Federation President Ibrahim Al-Juraifani said around 16 junior bowlers will undergo training camp here in Jeddah from Feb. 9 to 15 in preparation for two international competitions.
Asian Games men’s doubles gold medalists Bader and Hassan Al-Sheikh lead the list of national team candidates for the Bowling International Championship Kuwait and and Bahrain International Championship to be both held in April.
“And they have to work hard for it,” said Al-Juraifani.
Squash Team Place 2nd in Kuwait
JEDDAH, 5 February 2007 — The Saudi national squash team placed second in the Arab Championship in the 17-19 age group held recently in Kuwait. The host team took the first position and Qatar the third spot. Sudan and Iraq were the other teams who entered the tournament. Mohammed Al-Seif, Tahir Al-Ghisyan, Ibrahim Bufaih and Fahad Al-Amran comprised the Saudi team. Al-Seif won after beating Qatar 9-8, 9-7, 9-7. Up next for the Saudi team is the Gulf Cup in the same age group to be held in Riyadh in April.
Ittihad, Ahli to Meet Twice in Weekend
JEDDAH, 5 February 2007 — Al-Ittihad and Al-Ahli renew their rivalry in two fronts in the weekend.
On Thursday, the two teams meet in the final of the Saudi Basketball Al-Jawwal League at 6:30 p.m. at the Youth Welfare hall in Jeddah. Their football teams do battle on Friday at Prince Abdullah Al- Faisal Stadium here in the final of Prince Faisal ibn Fahd Cup.
Ahli Spikers to See Action in Tunisia JEDDAH — Saudi Volleyball League champions Al-Ahli and Al-Hilal teams are to enter training camp from Feb. 7 to 16 in Egypt. Arab News sources said only Al-Ahli will proceed to Tunisia to participate in the Arab Championship for Clubs at the end of the month. Hilal did not make the Tunisia trip for technical reasons. Meanwhile, the Saudi national volleyball team face a busy summer. They will play the Asian volleyball Championship to be held in Jakarta in July followed by the Arabian Championship and the Gulf Championship.
