JEDDAH, 8 August 2007 — Women students gained practical skills and experience during a summer program, which was organized jointly by the Saudi Red Crescent and the Saudi Civil Defense.
The program, which was hosted by the Al-Faisaliah Women’s Welfare Society and which ended recently, marked the culmination of the Al-Baik Food Systems’ summer program of activities for women students.
The program, which was entitled “With Al-Baik You Are the House Hero,” was launched by the company around three weeks ago to help students acquire new practical skills.
The final ceremony was attended by representatives of the Civil Defense and the Saudi Red Crescent, and a large number of students and their mothers.
Abu Ghazaleh, CEO of Al-Baik Food Systems Ltd., said: “We will keep our promise to continue supporting the youth in the Kingdom, encouraging them to lead a bright and promising future. We aim to provide future generations with self-esteem and confidence that would make them valuable members of their families and of society as a whole.”
Courses included training sessions in decor, art and craft, basic health advice, personal grooming, cooking, physical exercise, safety and first aid.
Over the past six years, more than 1,250 students have participated in the Al-Baik program.
Meanwhile, one of the more successful summer camps, which are being held this year, is the “Knowledge and Discovery Gathering,” which, for the first time, is offering women an opportunity to explore the environment through brief theoretical lectures and field trips.
Iman Jifri, director of the camp, told Arab News it was the first time for the camp to organize trips, which have been popular among participants. “In the beginning we thought of running it in July, but it seems like we will now extend it to the end of August due to a high demand,” she said.
Jifri said the purpose of the camp is to enable participants to explore the environment and relate to nature.
The camp offers trips, which have been organized in cooperation with Arabian Explorer, a local travel agent. Trips include boat rides on the red sea and lessons in fishing.
In addition to lessons in fishing, participants visit the Sea Sciences Museum, gold factories and historical places. They are also able to play sports like basketball, swimming and martial arts.
The camp offers a journalism course with Muna Al-Manjoumi from the Al-Hayat daily newspaper, a photography course with Muna Sunboul from the House of Photographers, and an art and décor course with artist Kholoud Batarfi.
