PARIS, 9 August 2007 — Scottish runners-up Glasgow Rangers eased into the Champions League qualifying third round with a 1-0 win away to Montenegro’s Zeta on Tuesday.

Rangers, who won the first leg 2-0 last week at Ibrox Park, advanced with a 3-0 aggregate win courtesy of a late DaMarcus Beasley goal.

The American international, who joined Rangers from PSV Eindhoven during the close season, struck nine minutes from time for his first goal in his new colors.

Beasley, who had missed the best chance in an uneventful first half when he fired just wide of the far post from a good position in the 11th minute, drove in a crisp shot from 16 meters to put the contest behind dispute.

Rangers next face either Red Star Belgrade or Estonian side Levadia Tallinn, the Serbian champions holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

Beitar Jerusalem’s hopes of progressing were dashed when Marcus Allback, who had already netted in FC Copenhagen’s 1-0 first leg win, levelled the score at 1-1 on the night for the Danish side seven minutes into extra time.

Copenhagen advanced 2-1 on aggregate.

Dinamo Zagreb will be up against Werder Bremen after Brazilian midfielder Sammir inspired them to a 3-1 second leg win over Domzale that handed them a 5-2 aggregate victory against the Slovenian team.

The 19-year-old set up the first two goals for Dinamo and scored the third after a brilliant solo run past four defenders.

Tampere United reached the third round of Europe’s premium competition for the first time when a Jari Niemi first-half goal earned them a 1-0 win at Levski Sofia.

Niemi scored from the penalty spot after collecting a cross from Tomi Petrescu, who scored last week to give the Finnish champions a 1-0 advantage over the Bulgarians after the first leg.

“It was a very big surprise as we knew that we were the underdogs,” Tampere coach Ari Hjelm said. “It was very important that Levski didn’t score in the first game. It helped us a lot.”

Seattle Upset MLS Team Colorado, Moves Into Semis of US Open Cup

Seattle Sounders pulled off a second consecutive upset with a 5-0 rout of Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids in the US Open Cup on Tuesday to qualify for the semifinals.

Seattle, tied with Portland on top of the USL First Division, extended its unbeaten streak to include 10 wins in its past 11 games.

That streak includes wins over Chivas USA in the third-round of the tournament on July 18 and an exhibition victory over English Championship club Preston North End.

The Sounders (11-5-5 in USL) will host FC Dallas on Sept. 4 in the semifinals. Dallas and the New England Revolution are the only MLS teams still alive in America’s principal cup competition.

The Sounders are just the seventh non-MLS team to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.

Seattle took the lead in the 23rd minute when Taylor Graham converted from a corner.

Just two minutes later, a free kick found Zach Scott unmarked in the penalty area, and the defender headed home.

A Colorado own goal just before halftime made the score 3-0, and with the contest all but over, Sebastien Le Toux and Josh Gardner capitalized to complete the scoring.

Colorado (4-6-9 in MLS) has won just once since May, and that was against USL outfit California Victory in the third round of the cup.
