RIYADH, 10 August 2007 — Saudi Arabia has awarded an SR383 million contract to South Korean giant Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. (HDEC) to build power transmission lines in the eastern region, Byung Joon Lee, Hyundai’s vice president, announced here yesterday.
Lee said “Hyundai has received two job orders to build 202 kilometers of power transmission lines with a cumulative value of SR383 million.” “The 380 kilovolt transmission line for the state-run Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) will be built within 25 months from now,” said the Hyundai executive, adding that the company has bagged this order mainly because it has earned a reputation for unsurpassed quality on its projects spanning over 47 countries across the world including Saudi Arabia.
Spelling out the features of the new power transmission project, Lee said “this is a prestigious project awarded by the high-profile state-run energy company of the Kingdom.” He said the HDEC has been demonstrating its technical and managerial expertise in construction projects around the world and this has led the company to win several such projects in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf countries recently.
He added that HDEC recently won another major contract worth SR2.9 billion to build a gas processing plant in Saudi Arabia. Under this contract, Lee said, the company will build facilities to process 550 million cubic feet of natural gas and 70,000 barrels of liquefied natural gas a day in a field near Riyadh and will be completed on Sept. 1, 2009.
Lee pointed out that HDEC is currently executing SR5 billion worth of projects in the Kingdom. Major ongoing jobs include a sub-station project, four transmission line projects and a gas processing plant. In fact, the HDEC has emerged as a giant on engineering and technology front, providing comprehensive construction services for roads, bridges, subways, dams, and reclamation and harbor projects.
Among HDEC’s renowned successes are the prestigious Jubail Industrial Harbor Project in Saudi Arabia, Penang Bridge in Malaysia, Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge in Bangladesh, and land reclamation projects in Singapore. In South Korea, HDEC has constructed many of the beautiful bridges spanning the Han River. HDEC’s capabilities in land reclamation and harbor projects are recognized as world-class.
Moreover, HDEC has also constructed 10 of Korea’s 16 nuclear power plants. Its technological capabilities in nuclear power plant design and construction have been recognized by the world’s foremost authorities. Earlier, HDEC has successfully completed an electricity transmission line project in Saudi Arabia, and power extension project at Jabel Ali Power and Desalination Station in the UAE.
