DUBAI, 13 August 2007 — The past weekend has been a deadly one on Dubai roads with as many as eight people being killed and 11 others injured in various car accidents across the city.
In one accident, a pedestrian died after being knocked off the Al-Manara Bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road by a speeding vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, a Pakistani national, is in police custody. The victim has not yet been identified.
In a double tragedy, six workers lost their lives on Friday morning on Emirates Road. Initially, a bus and a car were involved in a head-on collision in which three workers died. The car was thought to be on the wrong side of the road due to heavy fog.
While rescuers from Dubai Police were trying to free the occupants of the car, passengers on the bus disembarked to watch when a second bus collided into them killing three people on the spot. Ambulances rushed to the scene to deal with the double tragedy. The three occupants of the car died on their way to the hospital.
On the same day, a speeding car driven by a Chinese man killed a pedestrian crossing Sheikh Zayed Road. The victim, an Indian national, was not using the pedestrian bridge.
A spokesman from Dubai Police urged motorists to exercise care when driving, especially during foggy weather.
Rescuers from Dubai Police also managed to remove the body of a man who had died after falling in the shaft of a building. Occupants of the building had complained of a foul smell that was coming from the chute. The man had been dead for three days and had been reported missing at Naif police station.
