JEDDAH, 15 August 2007 — Saudi singer Sarah left the Briman jail on Sunday after spending about 18 months behind bars, two-thirds of her jail time, according to the Arabic newspaper Al-Yaum yesterday. Sarah is with her husband Mazin and child in Jeddah. She is said to have learned a good part of the Holy Qur’an while in jail.
Her husband was released two months ago from the prison after serving a similar sentence and receiving lashes. The two were found guilty of drug-related charges.
Sarah was sentenced to a two-year term in her absence by a Jeddah court. She and her husband were arrested and detained in Beirut until the formalities of their extradition were completed with the help of Interpol two years ago.
Her new album, which is being handled by Rotana, contains 12 songs written and composed by well-known poets and musicians, the newspaper reported.
Sarah is originally Palestinian but later adopted Saudi citizenship after being recognized as a singer. Noted Saudi musician, Sami Ehsan, first recognized her exceptional artistic skills.
