MAKKAH, 17 August 2007 — A Saudi man was surprised with the demands from a seasonal maid he wanted to hire to help his wife during the month before Ramadan, the daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday. The report said the man approached a facilitator for the illegal hiring of a runaway maid. The maid ended up asking for a SR1,200 a-month salary (on the high-end of the maid-salary spectrum), her own room, TV with satellite channels, a mobile phone and no work after 11 p.m. The Saudi man balked and asked the facilitator to find a maid with fewer demands. The middleman said that there are many families in desperate need of maids during the holiday season and are agreeing to the tough conditions for hiring a maid in this illegal manner.
