ISLAMABAD, 18 August 2007 — Pakistan government intends to regulate transplant of human organs through proper legislation in order to prevent unlawful human organ trading.
Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Sher Afghan Khan Niazi yesterday morning tabled a bill before the National Assembly known as “Removal and Transplantation of Human Organs Bill 2007.”
The Supreme Court had earlier taken notice of unlawful practices of human organs’ sale and purchase by professional criminals and had indicated involvement of surgeons in what the court had termed an “inhuman” practice.
Niazi while presenting the bill before the house said, “The government intends to eliminate human organs trading unlawfully and a law was necessary to take action against those involved in this trade.”
In another development Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry ordered the federal government to release 22 persons arrested during “Operation Silence” against the Red Mosque.
The chief justice sought an explanation from Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali of Federal Capital Territory under which authority he had ordered building of Madrasa Hafsa to be razed to the ground.
