JEDDAH, 23 August 2007 — Top favorite Badr Al-Alshaikh settled for ninth place in the Masters event as Saudi Arabia landed seventh in the medal standings at the end yesterday of the 14th Asian Youth Tenpin Bowling Championships in Beijing, China.
After leading the 16 qualifiers with total pinfalls of 3,904, Badr yesterday rolled 1,608 pinfalls in the second block of eight games and together with the first block of 1,558 wound up with a 16-game series of 3,216 for an average of 197.88.
An Asian Games double gold medalist (all-events, men’s doubles), the 19-year old Badr failed to make the cut for the three-man stepladder final, in which the qualifiers were Korean Choi Bok Eum, Adrian Yang of Malaysia and Hung Kun Yin of Chinese Taipei.
The third-ranked Hung went all the way to claim the boys Masters gold beating Ang 199-190 in the first stepladder match and No. 1 qualifier Choi in the next two matches 227-221 and 222-170.
In finishing seventh, Saudi Arabia won the boys all-events gold medal courtesy of Badr and silver in the four-man team event.
Next up for the team is training for the 2nd Asian Indoor Games to be staged in Macau from Oct. 26 to Nov.3. After this event the team would be seeing action again at the 11th Pan Arab Games in Egypt from Nov. 11 to 25.
