MADINAH, 28 August 2007 — A fire at a residence here took three lives and injured three others, according to yesterday’s Al-Watan newspaper. A mother and two of her five children succumbed to the flames and smoke just after midnight while they were sleeping. Firefighters suspect the fire may have been started intentionally.
Drug-Smuggling Attempt Foiled
JEDDAH, 28 August 2007 — Drug enforcement authorities recently thwarted attempts to smuggle 96 kilograms of hashish and 100,000 narcotic tablets into the country, it was announced yesterday. Maj. Ibrahim Abu-Hulail, spokesman of the Department for Combating Drugs, said the smugglers had used women as cover.

JEDDAH, 28 August 2007 — Jeddah police are investigating the murder of an Ethiopian shepherd who was residing in the country illegally, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. Authorities believe a group who dragged the body to nearby toilet murdered the man.
Suspect in Stabbing Turns Himself In
JEDDAH, 28 August 2007 — Jeddah police caught a man suspected of murdering his roommate less than 24 hours after the crime took place, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. The suspect allegedly fled the scene of the incident where he stabbed his Egyptian roommate over a financial dispute. According to police, friends talked the suspect into turning himself in.
