JEDDAH, 30 August 2007 — A Saudi man met a woman and he wanted her to become his third wife... until he bothered to ask her name. According to yesterday’s Al-Madinah newspaper, when the man discovered that her name was Aliyah he changed his mind. He said it was because his first wife has the same name and that, to him, would complicate things. So instead he asked to marry Aliyah’s older sister. The father accepted the proposal.

JEDDAH — Talk about red-hot passion! After her father called off a two-year engagement, a young woman’s fiancé decided to express his heartbreak with some gasoline and a lighter. The daily Okaz reported yesterday that firefighters responded to a non-fatal house fire. After winding up in police custody for arson, the young man said he was livid that the father called off the engagement. Was it a case of love lost? Perhaps. But the scorned would-have-been groom also said he spent a lot of money on his fiancée over two years, and felt that his money had been robbed along with his heart. This, of course, was neither here nor there in the eyes of the law: Burn a house down and the law will come after you. Perhaps next time the man should figure out why the engagement was cut off, and then seek counseling.
