During the last fifty years, Malaysia has prepared its people to be global citizens. Malaysia, which has been living the principle of peaceful co-existence, is a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work.
This year’s celebration carries the theme, “Malaysia Gemilang.” It’s aimed at enhancing the spirit of patriotism and duty toward the nation, to instill appreciation for the struggle to achieve independence, to strengthen national solidarity among the people and to cultivate a sense of responsibility toward security, peace and prosperity of the nation.
Back in Malaysia, the National Day Parade saw participation from governmental agencies, the private sectors, the uniformed bodies and the non-governmental organizations. The parade demonstrated the progress achieved by Malaysia over the years. This year, Malaysia’s focus will also be on the “Visit Malaysia Year 2007.”
As such, the campaign is a timely event to celebrate Malaysia’s golden jubilee. It is an occasion to rejoice and to share with the world the unique qualities and virtues that have shaped Malaysia to be the country that it is today. Overall, there are over 240 events, 50 of which are major ones. . All these events are presented in “One Golden Jubilee.” A celebration that brings Malaysia to the world, and the world to Malaysia.
As we mark our National Day today, I am happy to say that Malaysia is enjoying excellent bilateral relations with Saudi Arabia in various sectors. Last year, a number of senior Malaysian officials visited Saudi Arabia. The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah also visited Malaysia early last year. The visit enabled the two governments to maintain a close dialogue on global issues and intensified cooperation in all fields.
Economically, the relationship is, of course, being helped by the booming economy and impressive program of continued economic reforms in the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia is one of Malaysia’s main trade and investment partners in the region. There are considerable opportunities for this to develop, in both directions. I hope both Saudi and Malaysian businessmen will take advantage of each other’s expertise to enhance commercial links between the two countries. There are also growing links between the people of both countries. I am delighted that increasing numbers of Saudis are coming to Malaysia to visit and to study. More exchanges among businessmen, government officials, students and tourists should be encouraged.
During the last 50 years, there has been much change in Malaysia and in Saudi Arabia. But the friendship between the two countries has been consistent and cordial. Working together, I am confident that we can further strengthen our economic ties and forge a strong and comprehensive partnership.
On this auspicious occasion, I would like to extend my warm greetings and best wishes to all Malaysians in Saudi Arabia. I am confident that they will continue to have a great role in strengthening the warm relationship between Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
