RIYADH, 3 September 2007 — A 26-year-old Saudi man has been arrested in Riyadh in relation to the murder of a man, whose body was found in a derelict warehouse in the Al-Muzahimiya area.
According to Riyadh police, a local resident reported finding the body. The man had been stabbed in the chest and was lying in blood. The murder was then investigated by the Homicide Department, which interviewed the dead man’s relatives to ascertain who may have killed him. Investigations revealed that the dead man had a quarrel with a Saudi a few days before the murder and that the man had left the province. He was later found to be hiding in the Al-Uraija district of Riyadh.
“The suspect confessed to stabbing the victim after a quarrel broke out between them,” said a police statement. The suspect was handed over to concerned authorities for trial.
Meanwhile, police with the cooperation of various security agencies rounded up 57 illegal residents in a series of raids in the capital last Wednesday and Friday.
Those arrested were of different nationalities and many of them were involved in the selling and abuse of drugs, as well as other criminal activities. Others were illegally residing in the country.
Among those arrested were two Bangladeshis possessing hashish. They were handed over to the Drug Combating Department. A Yemeni national was also arrested for possessing drugs.
The raids also resulted in the closure of 12 illegal telephone booths operated by Bangladeshi nationals. Telephone equipment and cash amounting to SR605 were confiscated.
Security authorities raided a spare parts warehouse in the Al-Faisaliah district and confiscated over 10,000 boxes of fake car parts. In another raid, 420 used tires were seized from a car service center.
Another raid in the same district unearthed a den used for pirating DVDs and CDs. Around 1,000 DVDs were confiscated and handed over to the representative of the Ministry of Culture and Information.
Nine Saudis were arrested for other criminal activities in Al-Batha district. In the Al-Rawda district, security officers shut down 16 illegal telephone booths operated by two Bangladeshi nationals. Nearly 6,000 pre-paid telephone cards worth SR20 were confiscated in addition to SR1, 818 found in the possession of the two men.
