MILAN, 4 September 2007 — AC Milan dropped its first points in the Serie A with a 1-1 draw against Fiorentina yesterday.
Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu spoiled the Rossoneri’s perfect start to the season with a 56th-minute header after Milan playmaker Kaka had scored from the penalty spot in the 27th minute.
Milan, which beat Genoa 3-0 in its league opener nine days ago, joined Fiorentina as one of seven teams with four points in the standings. Juventus edged Cagliari 3-2 and AS Roma cruised past Siena 3-0 in their second-round matches on Sunday to lead the Serie A with six points.
Mutu scored against the run of play off Mario Alberto Santana’s cross.
Fiorentina defender Dario Dainelli conceded the penalty when he tripped Milan midfielder Massimo Ambrosini in the area as he surged through on goal.
Filippo Inzaghi wasted an easy chance to win the match in the 71st when Kaka slid the ball across the face of Fiorentina’s goal. However, the Italy forward somehow missed the ball and an open net.
Fiorentina midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic also hit the post at the other end eight minutes from time.
Three days after defeating Sevilla to win the European Super Cup for the fifth time, Milan should have buried Fiorentina in the first half.
Kaka picked out Alberto Gilardino in the 14th but the striker could not beat Viola goalkeeper Sebastian Frey, who made an excellent one-handed save.
Kaka looked for his second goal from distance in 33rd but his effort was off target.
Giampaolo Pazzini had Fiorentina’s best chance in the first half with a 28th-minute header that was just high.
He might have done better 10 minutes later when he failed to beat Milan goalkeeper Dida from two meters (yards) — although it wouldn’t have counted anyway, as the striker was called for offsides.
