JEDDAH, 12 September 2007 — Saudi Arabia is a modest country to say the least when it comes to levels of undress. It would be difficult to find an adult walking around in even knee-length shorts, much less stripped down to his skivvies in a Jeddah hypermarket. But this is precisely what happened when a man decided to try on underwear right in the middle of an aisle of a famous hypermarket yesterday. The man who was in his 30s and of Asian nationality, dropped his pants and slipped on a pair of underwear over the ones he was wearing, much to the dismay of a group of women shoppers, who informed a store manager. When confronted, the man said he wanted to make sure the underwear would fit. Unimpressed by this reasoning, the manager ordered the man to put his pants back on and told him he must buy the underwear that he had tried on. The man partly complied: He put his pants back on, but after the manager turned his back he quickly traded the worn underwear for a new pair. And thus the story ends, with the offending, briefly used underwear still sitting on a shelf somewhere in Jeddah.
