JEDDAH, 14 September 2007 — Makkah Charity, a 20-year-old institution that is involved in serving the underprivileged, has intensified its campaign.
The institution was established under the aegis of Muslim World League. Since its inception, it has been conducting social welfare activities, especially related to education, health and financially helping the underprivileged, “Makkah Charity is now intensifying its activities to mark the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan,” Abdullah Al-Debaiban, executive general manager of Makkah Charity, said yesterday.
“The institution is setting up social, educational and health centers with a view to offering services to orphans and widows as well as the underprivileged Muslims in general wherever they are,” he added.
It publishes books and research works related to its fields of activity. It has also been constructing mosques and wells in various Muslim countries. It has established 122 mosques at a cost of SR8.814 million and dug 516 wells at a cost of SR1.18 million.
The institution has been taking care of orphans in 11 countries, including Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan, Eritrea, Lebanon, Palestine, Sudan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bosnia. It owns and manages orphanages in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bosnia, Somalia and other countries at a cost of SR35 million.
Its projects, especially during Ramadan, include distribution of food during breaking of fast and meat to the poor and needy.
About 24,000 orphans are under the care of Makkah Charity at a cost of SR13.474 million. Additionally, it has undertaken health care facilities for 90,536 patients at a cost of SR163,419 million.
