“Nothing is worth it.” When I heard this sentence for the first time in my life I could not quite grasp it. I perhaps did not try to understand it or think about it. Back then, everything in life mattered to me.

In other words, my evaluation of what is and is not important was a little unbalanced. Insignificant things were a priority in my life. All this was due to my teenage mentality and lack of experience. I do not know. The more I think about how I used to preoccupy a great portion of my time indulging in silly stuff and the brain cells I used to waste worrying about nothing, I laugh so hard.

I used to be creative when dealing with anxiety. You could say that at that time worrying about stupid things was part of my daily routine. I used to hear people say: “Nothing is worth it,” and “Cheer up.” However, these words did not mean anything to me. I never understood them or grasped them.

Today, I am going to try to think aloud about the meaning of these phrases. Ask yourself do you worry?

If the answer is yes, then ask yourself again what is it that worries you? Are they things worthy of your concern and tension? Do you worry that your driver will not be able to find a parking spot in front of your children’s school in the midday heat?

Do you worry that the car or house installments are due? Do you think about what the future holds? Do you worry that your son seems unproductive at school? Do you worry that the car you wish to buy is not available in your favorite color? Or are you worried what to wear to your neighbor’s wedding? Is it work? Is it success? Do you think any of what was just mentioned deserves your worries?

When friends see a person worked up they usually say something along the lines of, “Take it easy, nothing is worth it, life is too short.”

You spend half of your life or probably all your life with the wrong list of priorities. Then you suddenly realize that what you omitted from your list is really top priority. You might discover that too late. Sometimes you might not and that is when some say ignorance is bliss.

The moral of the story: Think carefully of your life’s priorities and do not waste your time and energy over useless things or useless individuals. Life is too short after all and nothing is worth it.
