MAKKAH, 8 October 2007 — A section of road collapsed into a sinkhole in Makkah on Saturday, producing a large crack that consumed a police vehicle before Civil Defense workers could erect a safety fence.
“Around 7:30 p.m. yesterday, the control room received a report about a street collapse on Al-Zaher Street,” Maj. Abdullah Al-Amri, the spokesman of Makkah Civil Defense Authority, said yesterday.
The police officer driving the vehicle managed to jump out of the car before it fell into the hole. “Thank God, there wasn’t any loss of life,” said Al-Amri.
