ISLAMABAD, 14 October 2007 — Pakistan beefed up security in the capital Islamabad and major cities yesterday on the eve of Eid Al-Fitr.
Islamabad authorities and police made comprehensive foolproof arrangements to ensure peace during Eid today.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad Amer Ali Ahmad told a meeting presided over by Chief Commissioner Hamid Ali Khan that the city had been divided into three zones to maintain law and order and avert any untoward incident.
Special security measures have been put in place for Eid congregations. Security personnel will be deployed at mosques and places where Eid prayers will be held, he said.
Security in markets, commercial centers, parks and public places has also been tightened and private security guards have been asked to remain vigilant, Ahmad told the meeting.
Eid will be celebrated across Pakistan today, but some areas in the northern region celebrated Eid on Friday and also yesterday.
President Musharraf will offer Eid prayers at the General Headquarters ground and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz will offer his prayers at King Faisal Mosque today.
Militants Free Kidnapped Soldiers
Pro-Taleban militants yesterday released 30 kidnapped security personnel in South Waziristan.
The militants had abducted more than 200 soldiers over a month ago while they were on way to Laddah in South Waziristan from Wana.
The militants reportedly released 30 security personnel and handed them their four vehicles.
Mehsud tribesmen had made repeated attempts in the past to secure the release of the kidnapped security personnel.
Tribal elders are still in talks with militants for the release of rest of the abducted soldiers.
