RIYADH, 18 October 2007 — An Indian who appeared to be near death was dumped three days ago near the Riyadh Medical Complex, the Indian Embassy reported yesterday. Haneef Bhai, 57, was conscious when he was found but in a very weak state.
Bhai is recuperating in hospital. The embassy reported that it has paid a SR5,000 advance toward his treatment, while social workers are trying to arrange transfer of the patient to India.
The embassy said Bhai was suffering from partial paralysis and that one of his legs would have to be amputated. The man reportedly is suffering from diabetes and hypertension.
“When he was found, he did not have valid documents or a residence certificate (iqama) indicating who he was, so the embassy asked Indian social workers to search for his identity,” said Deputy Chief of Mission Rajeev Shahare. P. Balachandran, second secretary welfare, is handling the case.
Bhai is from the northwestern state of Gujarat and reportedly came to the Kingdom on a house driver visa but failed the test. He allegedly ran away from his sponsor and has worked illegally to survive.
