JEDDAH, 4 November 2007 — Jeddah United Sports Company with the support of Tamer Group and McDonald’s organized a basketball tournament in honor of 10-year-old Hawazin.
Hawazin was five years old when she was diagnosed with cancer. It was a shock for her family and it took them three years of treatment and hardship. But Hawazin is now a symbol of survival, hope and cure for all the children and adults who suffer from cancer.
“Friends of Hawazin” is a voluntary cancer support group under the umbrella of Al-Eman Cancer Society. Hawazin and her family founded the group which offers mental, emotional and financial support to cancer patients. The group believes in adopting a positive attitude in the treatment for the disease.
Hawazin’s Support Group offers gestures like taking children to the hospital if parents are busy, creating awareness and fund raising for underprivileged families.
The tournament started with a speech by Hawazin thanking the organizers, sponsors and teams for playing in her honor.
The teams:
Blue Team — Mohi Aldeen Kayal, Abdul Illah Kaaki, Yousif Abu Rashid, Faisal Gusaini and Anan Boushnag.
White Team — Rayan Islam, Faris Mosely, Faisal Baksh, Makram Gusaini and Hamza Abu Kadra.
Black Team consisted of Aseel Abu Rashid, Qassim Alireza, Raad Alaskari, Sultan Serafi and Abdulaziz Aalwasiyah.
Yellow Team — Abdulmajeed Madani, Mohammad Madani, Mohammad Kaaki, Mohammad Alshihri, Ahmad Kayal and Ahmad Rasheedi.
Blue team won first place in the tournament winning a record of 3/0. Hawazin distributed the medals to the teams. She also handed out the most valuable player (MVP) awards to Faris Mosely of White Team, Faisal Gusaini of Blue Team, Mohammad Kaaki of Yellow Team and Qassim Alireza of Black Team.
The aim of the tournament was to raise awareness and compassion for children with cancer. It is also to show solidarity with all victims of cancer and promote hope by honoring cancer survivors. Friends of Hawazin Basketball Tournament is one of many events staged by the organizers. Father and Son, Drink Milk tournament and the anti-smoking day are examples of some previous events. The organizers aim to send social messages through sports.
