MAKKAH, 4 November 2007 — Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah yesterday called upon Muslim scholars to find solutions for contemporary issues within the perspective of Islam. King Abdullah made the remarks in a keynote address to a meeting of the Islamic Fiqh Council, an affiliate of the Makkah-based Muslim World League (MWL). Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal delivered the speech on the king’s behalf.
In his speech, King Abdullah denounced the strident campaign against Islam. “You have a great responsibility to defend Islam and its Prophet, highlighting the true picture of Islam,” Abdullah told the scholars who came from different parts of the Islamic world.
King Abdullah commended the MWL’s firm stand against the deviant group, a reference to Al-Qaeda militants, as well as its efforts to augment the culture of Muslim youth by inculcating the moderate teachings of Islam in their minds. He also reminded the scholars of their great role in combating terrorism and other dangers that beset Muslim societies.
MWL Secretary-General Dr. Abdullah Al-Turki commended the Saudi government’s continuous support for the Fiqh Council and Islamic activities within the Kingdom and abroad. He announced that the MWL would organize a conference on Islamic rulings or fatwa next year.
Al-Turki emphasized the need for narrowing differences of views by Islamic scholars on various issues in order to strengthen Islamic unity.
