MAKKAH, 9 November 2007 — A faulty computer caused a fire at a residential building for hospital staff in Al-Azizia Street, Makkah. Eight Civil Defense units and four Red Crescent ambulances arrived at the location following an emergency call about the blaze. Civil Defense units were able to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to other apartments in the building. “Following investigations, it transpired that a doctor’s children were playing on a computer when the machine abruptly caught fire that rapidly spread,” said a Civil Defense spokesman. Local resident, Ashraf Khalil, who lives in the building, said that all residents were safe.
Police Arrest Cable Gang in Makkah
MAKKAH, 9 November 2007 — Following several complaints, police arrested a gang of thieves that stole cables in the Al-Tanim district of Makkah. The gang was led by an Asian national and received help from two Saudis. The Asian gang leader was deported, while the rest of the gang was sentenced to six months in jail. Meanwhile, authorities arrested three expatriates robbing shops close to the Grand Mosque. Maj. Abdul Muhsin Al-Maymani, spokesman for Makkah police, said that three men had a criminal record. “The authorities have been able to arrest number of criminals who were involved in different crimes,” he said.
