DUBAI, 15 November 2007 — A Filipino brother and sister attempting to smuggle 18 kilos of stolen gold jewelry worth around 6.5 million dirhams ($1.7 million) out of the country to the Philippines were arrested by police at Dubai airport.

According to a police statement, the brother had stolen the jewelry from his employer over a period of four months, while working as a salesman in the gold souk. On questioning, the man told police he had stolen pieces of jewelry after showing them to customers. Instead of returning the jewelry back into the display counter, he would quietly hide them in his lunchbox to take home.
