JEDDAH, 17 November 2007 — Korean Jong Go Lim played superb golf and claimed his just reward when he won the overall title in the Wartsila Power Masters 2007 Golf Tournament at the Desert Lakes Golf Club here yesterday.
The 55-year old Jong, executive director at Shobokshi Development & Trading Co., tallied 44 points to be the only one left standing among 80 hopefuls in the chase of the top trophy in the Stableford format competition.
A 4-handicap, Jong gave it his best shot in excellent playing conditions to shoot the equivalent of 8-under in medal play.
“I’m very happy to win. I could not sleep well the night before because of excitement, more so because my wife just arrived from Korea. She told me to do my best,” said the stocky Jong, who is an engineer by profession.
The 19-handicap Lacsado, who advanced his cause with the help of six pars for a net 18 points, and Mehpoob matched totals of 40 points.
The awards for most accurate longest drive and nearest to pin went to Asad Hameed and K.S. Chung.
In addition to the Finnish-made glass trophies and Tissot wristwatches awarded to the winners commemorative trophies were given away to each participant.
Wartsila, a Finnish power contracting company, sponsored the entire event with all proceeds going to Desert Lakes to be used for the further development of golf in Jeddah.
Wartsila Managing Director Atul Dua, himself a golfer, attended the awards ceremony along with the company’s HR Manager Mumtaz Khan.
Dua told the audience in his short speech that when he was asked what does golf mean to you he said, “it’s all about life, discipline, responsibility, honesty and a lot of fun.” Indeed, the players enjoyed a good day out on the course.
The DLGC Committee, with Anthony Richardson, Amr Kashoggi, and Alex Sykes at the helm, said they are doing more for the benefit of the members and that benefactors are helping behind the scene.
Next up are the three major tournaments to be sponsored by Malaysian Airlines in January, Jotun Paints and Raytheon in the first week and last week of February.
