MAKKAH, 22 November 2007 — A 90-year-old man insisted on marrying a woman immediately after his wife died, the daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday. The unusual request was not made because he wanted a soul mate but because he wants a wife to wake him up for Fajr (dawn) prayer and to make him coffee in the mornings. The old man’s wife passed away a week ago, so he approached his sons and grandsons asking them to find him a bride who was his age. He also went to his local barbershop to get a haircut and shave his beard to prepare himself for his new alarm clock.

JIZAN — Talk about a good son. A young man in the village of Ramada picked up his mom from the hospital in a car bedecked with flowers and bells, according to yesterday’s Al-Watan newspaper. After five years, Ali Ghawi’s mother finally received the eye surgery she desperately needed. It has been a rough road to getting the procedure done at a state hospital under Saudi social insurance, but efforts paid off and Al-Ghawi decided to celebrate by decorating his old car as a gift to dear old mom. Ghawi told bemused hospital staffers that he couldn’t afford to take his mother to a private hospital and was relieved that his mother could live a normal life once again.
