MAKKAH, 26 November 2007 — A Nigerian overstayer, who carried out illegal backstreet abortions in Makkah charging women SR4,000, was arrested recently in a sting operation.

“We heard about him and managed to locate him in Makkah. We told him that there was a woman who needed to undergo an urgent abortion,” said a police spokesman, adding that the sting operation was led by Col. Muhammad Al-Minshawi.

The 35-year-old Nigerian man initially said he would carry out the abortion for SR5,000 but then reduced the price to SR4,000.

“He was insistent on doing the operation in the Al-Rusaifa district of Makkah. We nabbed him at the place where he told us to meet him. He had a bag full of medicines and tools with him,” said the police spokesman.

Arab News was given access to the man, who said that he is married with two children and that he converted to Islam from Christianity. He had arrived in the Kingdom three years ago to perform Haj and had overstayed. “I used to work as a nurse in my home country. I had experience in this sort of work,” he said.
