YANBU, 30 November 2007 — The Court of Grievances in Madinah on Wednesday sentenced students involved in attacking teachers in Al-Mrameia high school, some 280 km from Yanbu, to jail.
A total of 10 people — three students from school, three of the students’ cousins and four government workers — were involved in the attack on high school teachers last year.
The General Investigation and Prosecution Committee investigated the case and transferred it to the Court of Grievances where the culprits were sentenced to two years in prison and SR20,000 in fines for each one.
The teachers in Al-Mrameia high school in the village demanded to be transferred away from the school. They also demanded from the Ministry of Education to close down the school and stop the SR400 monthly reward money issued to the students.
Early in the first semester of last year, more than 100 students threatened the teachers and demanded that they should increase their grades after the midterm examination. The teachers fought back and filed a complaint against the students and some teachers who were accused of favoring the students.
Some of the students that were involved in the assault against the teachers were from outside the school and some were cousins of the students from the village. The students and their cousins surrounded the teachers inside the school and prevented them from going outside from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. until police took care of the situation.
The police in the village investigated the case with the teachers and the students. Police found out that a group of people, cousins to the student and who are working in Jeddah, came to the village and escalated the incident.
The Ministry of Education suspended the students for one year and ordered to complete their high school education outside the village.
