MALAPPURAM, 1 December 2007 — Select Akshaya common resource centers in Malappuram district have launched medical transcription and psychometric profiling courses as part of Kerala’s drive to tap information and communication technology to fuel development.
Medical transcription training is being conducted in collaboration with Keltron (Kerala State Electronics Development Corp) and will be monitored by the state’s IT Mission. “We have already trained 24 Akshaya entrepreneurs (owners of IT kiosks) to train candidates in MT and psychometric profiling with the help of Keltron,” M. Salim, the Akshaya project coordinator in the district, said. “The training program will be extended to other Akshaya centers after evaluating the first phase of the initiative.” The medical transcription program elicited good response from entrepreneurs, with 50 of them coming forward to join the project. From these applicants, the best performing Akshaya centers will run the project.
The transcription training will be for six months and will cost Rs.15,000. Each center will have two trainers with either postgraduate diploma in computer applications or diploma in computer applications.
“BPO (business process outsourcing units) here are facing a severe shortage of skilled manpower. Keltron is conducting a transcription course at Karakulam in Thiruvananthapuram and it has 20 seats. The students are recruited by companies straight from the campus even before they complete the course,” Salim said.
