JEDDAH, 6 December 2007 — The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has intercepted and destroyed more than SR2.5 million worth of expired food — comprising 40 tons of frozen meat, pastries and pickles — before it reached the local market in Jeddah.
The seizures follow an official order by Commerce and Industry Minister Dr. Hashim Yamani who called on the authorities to crack down on the sale of expired food.
Samples of the food were sent to laboratories for testing; results showed that the food was not fit for human consumption. Those involved in the trade, many of them overstayers, have been fined. “The ministry is working hard to protect the health of citizens and residents. We’ve received many calls from traders about expired food being sold,” said a ministry spokesman. “We thank everyone who has helped us and we appreciate all their efforts,” he said.
